I have this memory of coming home from school one day, super excited, telling my Mom all about my new best friend Lisa. I told her that we were going to be best friends from now on because we had so much in common. We both had Dads named Doug, we both had dogs named Spike, we both had little sisters, we both lived on farms, and - this was the kicker - we had almost the same birthday! Mine was March 25, and hers was March 30!
I remember being so excited that I could barely contain myself. I mean, come on! When you're five, those are some rock-solid reasons to be BFFs, right?
And then I remember my Mom gave me a look that left me totally puzzled. I didn't know what it meant back then, but I now recognize that look as: "That's not really how these things work kid, but you're too young to explain why, so I'm just going to keep my mouth shut and smile and nod."
Well, today, I made that face. My daughter and her friend from next door were in my living room, having that same conversation.
"You like pink? I like pink!"
"You like popsicles? I like popsicles!"
"You like doggies? I HAVE a doggie!"
I kind of laughed to myself, because the two of them have been playing together for a good 8 months now, and if you haven't figured these things out about each other yet, then what the heck HAVE you been talking about? But, I'm a grown up and I don't know anything, I guess.
I left the room to do some laundry. When I came back, they were still at it, and they were now yelling at the top of their lungs.
"YOU LIKE TO RIDE BIKES??? I LOVE TO RIDE BIKES!!!!!!"
And then:
"YOU PEE YOUR PANTS SOMETIMES? I JUST PEED MY PANTS A MINUTE AGO! Don't tell your mom though. I'm hiding it, and she'll make me go home and get dry pants."
